Kenya can yet again sing Lupita Nyong’o’s praises as the Oscar-winner makes history again. This time, she’s doing it on the Broadway stage alongside Zimbabwean-American actress, Danai Gurira who wrote the play Eclipsed.

Eclipsed enjoyed a sold-out off-Broadway performance at the Public Theatre last year which resulted in its preview on Broadway at the Golden Theatre on Tuesday 23 February.

Nyong’o and her cast mates made Broadway history for having the first female cast, director, and writer.

I guess it’s right what Beyonce’s song says, girls do in fact run the world… or could, but in this case, they are surely running Broadway.

Eclipsed is the third play that Gurira has written in the last 10 years, at least, the ones that have been produced.

So what is Eclipsed all about?

Eclipsed is the story about a group of women who have been held captive during the Liberian Civil War. They join together to create a community until Lupita rebel character arrives and upsets their routine.

They soon forge a close-knit community which inspires new heights of strength in all of them against the war conditions.

The play is described as a gripping tale of hope, humour and resilience—and the only new play by a woman on Broadway this season.

The play was first produced at The Public Theatre Off-Broadway, and earned rave reviews after its debut in October, and due to the big crowd, it drew the play was extended twice before closing on 29 November 2015.

On Tuesday R&B singer Deborah Cox also came out to support as well as Misty Copeland (among others) the ballerina, who became the first African-American female principal dancer at The American Ballet Theatre.

The play officially opens on March 6. In addition to her Broadway run, Lupita will next be seen in the live-action version of The Jungle Book.
